How do you choose a hiring partner for India?
Judge four things and ignore the rest. Whether they have closed your seniority in your market, who personally runs the search and how technical they are, how and when they are paid, and what happens if the hire leaves. Firms that answer all four in writing behave differently from firms that answer none, and the difference shows up by week three of the search rather than at the end.
"We have spoken to five recruitment agencies in India and they all say the same things. Same promises, similar fees, everyone claims deep networks. How do we actually tell them apart before we commit to one?"VP Engineering, Series B health SaaS · first senior hire in India
If you have a call today, read only this.
Every firm you speak to will describe deep networks, rigorous assessment and a consultative approach. That language is free, so it carries no information. Knowing how to choose a hiring partner for India means replacing the impression the pitch creates with four things you can actually check.
Criterion one, and the shortest route to how to choose a hiring partner for India.
Not similar roles. Not the same function at a different level. The specific combination of seniority, discipline and company stage that you are hiring for, in India.
A firm that places mid-level engineers at scale has a genuinely valuable capability and it is not the capability that closes a VP of Engineering. The networks are different, the approach is different, and the candidates will not take the call.
Criterion two: who actually runs your search.
This is the question that filters most of the market, and it takes one sentence. Who will personally run this search, and can I speak to them before I decide?
In a large firm the partner who wins the work is frequently not the person who delivers it. That is not dishonest, it is how the model is structured, but you should know whether the person assessing your shortlist has ever hired the role you are opening.
The named consultant predicts the outcome of a senior search more reliably than the firm's logo, its size, or anything in the pitch deck.
Criterion three: how and when they are paid.
Fee structure is not a pricing detail, it is a behavioural signal. It tells you what the firm is incentivised to do at each stage of the search.
Paid entirely on placement, a firm is rewarded for volume of submissions and speed, because unpaid work is a cost. Paid across milestones, the incentive shifts toward getting the brief right and the shortlist narrow. Neither is dishonest. You just want to know which behaviour you are buying, and whether it matches the role.
Put us through all four criteria on an introductory call. We answer them in writing.
Discuss a mandate →Criterion four: what happens if the hire leaves.
Almost nobody reads the replacement terms until they need them, which is the worst possible time to discover what they say.
Ninety days is standard in India. Some firms offer less, and a shorter window on a senior role is worth asking about, because senior hires rarely fail inside three months.
Resignation may be covered while termination is not, or the guarantee may void if the role changed after the hire joined, which on an early stage team it almost always does.
Matching the firm to the mandate.
Twenty engineers over nine months at mid level. You want throughput, pipeline discipline and a sensible cost per hire. Depth of network matters less because the pool is deep.
One person who changes the trajectory of the team. The candidates are not applying to anything, so the entire value is in a network and a reputation that took years to build.
The first call, and what a good answer sounds like.
Where we fit, and where we would point you elsewhere.
If you apply the four criteria above, you have most of how to choose a hiring partner for India without needing anyone's pitch deck. We run dedicated searches on milestone-based fees for leadership, founding and specialist hires into India, and we build India teams from the leadership layer down. That is the work we are built for, and our case studies are the evidence rather than the pitch.
If you are hiring thirty mid-level engineers on the shortest possible timeline, a volume specialist will serve you better than we will, and we will say so on the first call rather than the third.
Describe the mandate. If we are not the right firm for it we will tell you what kind of firm is.
