Design hiring where taste,
systems thinking, and
craft all matter.
Portfolio review is necessary, but it reveals craft, not thinking. The collaboration signal, the design systems instinct, and how a designer works with product and engineering under pressure are what distinguish genuinely strong design hires. As a UX designer recruiter, Talhive tests all three before presentation, not after.
Design hiring is consistently misread. Most interviews test aesthetics and tool proficiency. The most consequential design skills, systems thinking, clear communication under ambiguity, and knowing when polish matters and when speed does, are almost never assessed. Talhive tests what the portfolio does not reveal.
Four design roles.
Each demands a different lens.
Design talent spans a wide range of contexts. A design systems engineer and a consumer UX designer require completely different sourcing approaches, assessment criteria, and motivation alignment.
Three ways design searches
produce the wrong outcome.
Portfolio reveals craft, not judgment
Strong portfolios show what a designer can produce in the right conditions. They do not show how the designer makes decisions under ambiguity, constraint, or time pressure. Those are the conditions that actually matter.
Collaboration signal never tested
How a designer works with product management and engineering is one of the strongest predictors of their organisational effectiveness. It is almost never assessed in design interviews, and it is exactly where most design hires fail.
Speed vs polish judgment ignored
The best designers know when craft matters and when speed does. Most design interviews only test the former. Placing a high-polish designer in a fast-iteration product environment, or vice versa, is a predictable mismatch.
What Talhive tests
that portfolios do not show.
The job of a UX designer recruiter is to surface the signals a portfolio cannot show. Every shortlisted design candidate is assessed across dimensions that require direct conversation, not portfolio review. The assessment produces a written brief with competency evidence, motivation analysis, and risk flags before the client invests interview time.
